Human-Salmon Relationships

We explore underrepresented cultural and historical narratives of salmon decline and the role of hatcheries in charting human-salmon futures. We do this through a critical realist review of public-facing and grey literature (published information from non-academic sources) on salmon hatcheries in Canada and the United States. This review characterises knowledge about the social and cultural dimensions of the hatchery debate, identifies gaps in the grey literature, and compares and contrasts narratives represented across diverse sources and knowledge systems.

Understanding the social value and role of hatcheries in Canada and the United States helps support more equitable assessments of hatchery benefits and identify practices and factors that contribute to greater social outcomes (e.g., Indigenous self determination, youth engagement and education).
